The Native Americans called it Squantum, "Heap
of Rocks", and they were the first to enjoy meeting on the handsome
peninsulas jutting out into Narragansett Bay. By the mid 1800's,
Captains and owners of Clipper Ships gathered here, and the
fame of Squantum spread wide.

In 1872, the Squantum Assocation was incorporated.
Permanent club houses were erected and judged "the brightest
bit of architecture north of the famed villas of Newport."
